According to Quintanilla (2015), an engaging technology (known as "engaging" in the author's own English translation of the term) should meet the following criteria: i) open: accessible and appropriate; ii) versatile: susceptible to alternative uses; iii) docile: controllable by the user; iv) limited: foreseeable consequences, or applying the precautionary principle; v) reversible: we must be able to go back; vi) recoverable: active maintenance and waste recovery; vii) understandable: manifest, transparent, non-opaque design; viii) participatory: to facilitate human cooperation; ix) sustainable: enabling energy and resource savings and recycling; and x) socially responsible: ensuring that the implementation of a new technology does not contribute to worsening the situation of the most disadvantaged groups.

Our applications are built with Squeak. Squeak Smalltalk can be considered an "engaging technology" technology, and it has the following characteristics that generate a close, emotional connection with users:
